The United Nations The United Nations is central to global efforts to solve problems that challenge humanity. Cooperating in this effort are more than 30 affiliated organizations, known together as the UN system. Day in and day out, the UN and its family of organizations work to promote respect for human rights, protect the environment, fight disease and reduce poverty. The page below links you to the ways in which the UN system works with partnership with civil society on issues of global concern.

The UN Non-Governmental Liaison Service (NGLS) NGLS is a voluntary funded, inter-agency programme of the UN system. Among other tasks it helps promote the participation of NGOs in major UN events and processes. It is concerned with the entire UN development agenda.

ECOSOC Committee on Non-Governmental Organizations The Committee on Non-Governmental Organizations is a standing committee of the ECOSOC. Among other matters, it considers NGO applications for consultative status with ECOSOC and monitors consultative relationships. The web site contains an updated calendar of U.N. meetings of interest to NGOs in consultative status, and other NGO-related information.

Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) Section of the Department of Public Information (DPI) at United Nations (DPI-NGO) The Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) Section of the Department of Public Information (DPI) at United Nations Headquarters serves as the liaison between the Department and NGOs associated with DPI. These NGOs disseminate information about the UN thereby building knowledge of and support for the Organization at the grass roots level. Currently, close to 1,600 NGOs from all regions of the world are associated with DPI.

International Labour Organization (ILO) The ILO was founded in 1919 and is the UN specialized agency which formulates international labour standards in the form of Conventions and Recommendations setting minimum standards of basic labour rights.

International Monetary Fund (IMF) The IMF promotes international monetary cooperation, exchange stability, and orderly exchange arrangements; to foster economic growth and high levels of employment; and to provide temporary financial assistance to countries to help ease balance of payments adjustment. United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) As the UN’s development agency, the UNDP uses its global network to help the UN system and its partners to raise awareness and track progress of the UN Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), while it connect countries to the knowledge and resources needed to achieve these goals.
