WHO's Relations with Nongovernmental Organizations
WHO has a long and rich history of working with nongovernmental organizations. Two types of relations are provided for in the current policy for relations with NGOs, they are formal and informal. A link to the policy, set out in the Principles governing relations between WHO and NGOs, is below.
All relations begin informally. How? There are two main "routes". Firstly, direct contact between an NGO and a WHO technical department. Secondly, an NGO may seek the help of the CSI or, as appropriate, its counterpart in a WHO regional office, to explore the possibility of mutually beneficial exchanges. More information about the regions and country offices is available by clicking on the "About WHO" link above.
It is helpful to have a short note on how an NGO considers its work relates to WHO priorities, as well as the following documents:
- a copy of the NGO's constitution and/or by-laws or equivalent document(s)
- membership lists, where appropriate
- list of elected officers or, as appropriate, members of governing body (for example Board)
- annual reports for the most recent three years and audited financial accounts
- publications/media catalogue, if any
- most recent scientific/professional journal, if any
- project/research evaluation reports, if any
The information, which should be transmitted either to CSI or the appropriate WHO regional office, is shared with relevant technical departments. Where appropriate, NGOs are put into contact with interested departments to explore the possibility of informal exchanges.
