ePORTUGUÊSe

Mission

The ePORTUGUÊSe is a WHO initiative to promote and strenghten collaboration among Portuguese-speaking WHO Member States. It aims to establish and maintain an alliance of health-related institutions and health workers in Portuguese-speaking countries, for promoting better health through the development of knowledge communities and the sharing of Portuguese-language information resources.

Background

Created after the Ministerial meeting held in Mexico City in 2004, the ePORTUGUÊSe initiative is an illustration of how Knowledge Management is being developed in a cooperative way.
The ePORTUGUÊSe was created to support Portuguese speaking countries to improve their access to a network of knowledge and evidence-based health information.
Its main purpose is to generate an on going alliance of institutions and health professionals to disseminate, distribute and circulate information and use this knowledge to improve health care delivery and enhance health systems.
The ePORTUGUESe is also committed to build capacity of human resources for health.

It came to fulfill a long term demand of health professionals in the African Portuguese-speaking countries who have continually expressed their need for improved access to health information and knowledge in their own language.

Portuguese is the sixth most spoken language in the world with 220 million people distributed through eight countries (Angola, Brazil, Cape Verde Guinea-Bissau, Mozambique, Portugal, Sao Tome and Principe, and Timor-Leste) spanning four continents covered by four WHO Regional Offices (AFRO, AMRO, EURO and SEARO).
It is an official WHO language in AFRO and AMRO.
It is the third most spoken language in the Western world and the most widely spoken in the southern hemisphere.

• Plataforma desenvolvida pela OMS para fortalecer a colaboração entre os países de língua portuguesa na área da informação e capacitação em saúde.
• Iniciativa que oferece aos oito países de língua portuguesa (Angola, Brasil, Cabo Verde, Guiné-Bissau, Moçambique, Portugal, São Tomé e Príncipe e Timor-Leste) a oportunidade de receber informação em saúde atualizada e relevante em seu próprio idioma.
• Criada depois da reunião ministerial sobre pesquisa em saúde realizada no México em 2004, o ePORTUGUÊSe veio satisfazer uma longa demanda dos profissionais de saúde dos PALOP que continuamente requisitavam a possibilidade de acessar informação em saúde em seu próprio idioma.
• Considerada a sexta língua mais falada no mundo, o português tem mais de 220 milhões de pessoas distribuídas por oito países em quatro continentes.
• Desenhada especificamente para os países de língua portuguesa é um instrumento que facilita o acesso à informação em saúde e contribui para que os países atinjam suas metas previstas nos Objetivos do Desenvolvimento do Milênio.
• O ePORTUGUÊSe é um exemplo de estratégia global que visa estender o princípio do multilinguismo aos países em desenvolvimento.

Objectives

• Improve access to health-related information in Portuguese, building on a platform developed by the Latin American and Caribbean Center on Health Sciences Information (BIREME) a specialized center of the Pan-American Health Organization/WHO, and in particular, the Virtual Health Library (VHL) model;

• Foster access to the latest health information at local, regional and national levels;

• Promote visibility and support for local knowledge production;

• Facilitate the application of knowledge into policy and action;

• Build Communities of Practice (CoP) and discussion groups to support the sharing of knowledge; • Contribute to WHO's Global Health Library initiative;

• Contribute to WHO's HINARI initiative. A platform to encourage research;

• Contribute to WHO's effort to promote multilingualism.

Objetivos

• Promover e melhorar o acesso à informação em saúde disponível em português, utilizando o modelo da Biblioteca Virtual em Saúde (BVS) desenvolvida pelo Centro Latino-Americano e do Caribe de Informação em Ciências da Saúde (BIREME/OPAS/OMS);

• Promover o acesso e a disseminação da informação em saúde disponível em português, utilizando o modelo da Biblioteca Azul;

• Dar ênfase ao conhecimento nacional e regional contribuindo para o desenvolvimento da capacitação local, institucional e nacional,

• Dar visibilidade e apoio à produção local de conhecimento, fortalecendo a pesquisa em português;

• Facilitar a capacitação e treinamento de recursos humanos em saúde em diversas áreas do conhecimento;

• Promover o desenvolvimento de Comunidades de Práticas (CoP) usando tecnologias inovadoras através da Internet como BLOGS, SharePoint e grupos de discussão em diversas áreas do conhecimento para facilitar a discussão entre os profissionais de saúde de todos os oito países de língua portuguesa;

• Desenvolver alianças com parceiros chave como a Comunidade de países de língua portuguesa (CPLP); a Fundação Oswaldo Cruz (FIOCRUZ), a Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian, a Comissão Européia entre outras;

• Contribuir com os esforços da OMS para promover o multilinguismo entre os seus Estados Membros;

• Contribuir para a Biblioteca Global em Saúde (Global Health Library);

• Promover capacitação e treinamento no uso do portal HINARI (www.who.int/hinari).
