Dr Margaret Chan took up her duties as Director-General on 4 January 2007. She set out a six-point agenda to take the Organization forward, focusing on the following areas:

  • promoting development
  • fostering health security
  • strengthening health systems
  • harnessing research, information and evidence
  • enhancing partnerships
  • improving performance.

During her first year in office, Dr Chan travelled to 25 countries, visiting all six regions. This photo story chronicles some of her travels as she worked to make the six-point agenda a reality.
